February 2021 Update

We learned last week that the Intercity Bus service from Whitianga to Thames has been cancelled. Whilst there had been some discussion about a Peninsula bus service connecting Whitianga with Tairua, Whangamata, Thames and Coromandel Town, the WRRA position is that we feel this route is very well served by the other two services, Go Kiwi and Tairua Bus Company, and that another district bus service would get limited support.

The public transport gap that does need to be addressed is the Whitianga Loop Bus, and we are continuing to work on this project. Fundraising is underway to establish a 6 month trial. An estimated $47,000 will be needed to conduct this trial, however there is a good level of interest from local business and community groups. If the trial is successful, then we will be eligible to apply to Waikato Regional Council and Waka Kotahi (LTSA) for funding to support a permanent service. The Thames trial has now been locked in as a permanent service and is proving very popular.
